Setting a new employee into a team is often quite a stressful experience for both HR managers and a hire. To prepare all the necessary documents, to describe job responsibilities and to make sure that a new team member knows your organisation’s ins and outs are all important steps towards hiring and training a new employee that can appear to be be overwhelming. With proper orientation and well structured onboarding procedures you can provide a smooth transition for every single employee involved.
There’s three pillars on which a stressless and effective onboarding lies and we highly recommend to take them into consideration when creating an onboarding strategy:
Accommodate
Make sure that a new employee will feel comfortable when he arrives. Conduct a tour of the office, introduce him to other staff mebers and finally set him up with his workspace (which is supposed to be prepared before his arrival, so he won’t wait for a PC or something else). World leading organisations admit that they tend to give new colleagues on their first day some welcome gifts like a t-shirt or a cup with a company’s logo, sweets and office supplies which will definitely prove useful in future. Such presents let the hire feel welcomed.

Assimilate
Introduce a hire to his new team members by doing quick roundup so everybody remember their new colleague. There’s nothing worse for a newbie than discovering that his new duties differ from those imagined before and discovering that the position is completely different that was expected, so provide the new colleague with a written outline of the responsibilities the job entails and assign a mentor who can help the hire with any questions.
Accelerate
Every single hire wants to become productive as soon as possible but don’t give him too many information at first. Block some time for orientation - let the new employee’s first day be as more of orientation day than a working day. And do not forget about setting regular feedbacks for the newbie - it will let him know that his ideas are welcomed and to realize that he does form part of the company.
Onboarding isn’t something you can do right before a hire makes his first appearance to the office. It’s a long and complicated process that you need to think hard about. Give your new colleagues an outstanding first experience, so you can both know they’ve made the right choice.
